Measuring beds, including curved and irregular ones
For a simple rectangular bed, measure length and width in feet along the ground, not along a slope. For an L-shaped or curved bed, split it into two or three rectangles and add the areas together — a border that hugs a curved walkway can usually be approximated as two or three straight-sided rectangles without meaningfully changing the total.
Circular beds, like a ring around a tree, use area = pi x radius^2. Measure the diameter across the ring and divide by two to get the radius. A 12-foot-diameter tree ring has a 6-foot radius, so its area is 3.14159 x 6^2 = about 113 square feet — plug that square footage straight into the calculator, or into the cubic-yard formula below, in place of length x width.
How deep should mulch actually go
Depth is the input people guess wrong most often, and it swings the cubic-yard total directly — doubling the depth doubles the volume.
- 2-3 inches for established beds that already have a mulch base and just need topping up
- 3-4 inches for new beds where the main job is suppressing weeds
- About 6 inches of engineered wood fiber under playground equipment, per common playground safety guidance for fall-height cushioning
- Never pile mulch against tree trunks or stems ("volcano mulching") — it traps moisture against the bark, invites rot and pests, and can kill the tree over a few seasons; keep mulch a few inches back from the trunk in a flat ring instead
The formula the calculator uses
cubic yards = (length_ft x width_ft x depth_ft) / 27, where depth_ft = depth_inches / 12. For a 20 ft x 5 ft bed at 3 inches deep: depth_ft = 3 / 12 = 0.25 ft, so volume = 20 x 5 x 0.25 = 25 cubic feet, and 25 / 27 = about 0.93 cubic yards.
A shortcut worth memorizing: 1 cubic yard covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep (27 cubic feet / 0.25 ft = 108 sq ft). Weight and hauling: mulch fills the bed before it hits payload
Mulch is bulky but light, so a full pickup bed of mulch is usually well under the truck's payload rating — the opposite of hauling gravel or soil, where you hit the weight limit long before the bed looks full. Rough weights per cubic yard:
- Wood chips: about 500 lb/yd3
- Bark nuggets: about 700 lb/yd3
- Playground chips: about 300 lb/yd3
- Rubber mulch: about 1,000 lb/yd3
- Compost: about 1,080 lb/yd3
- Wet or freshly-chipped mulch: 40-60% heavier than the dry weights above — a rainy week or a load straight off the chipper can push a 500 lb/yd3 material past 750 lb/yd3
Bags vs. bulk
A standard retail bag holds 2 cubic feet. Since a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, that works out to 27 / 2 = 13.5 bags per cubic yard. For a small touch-up bed under a cubic yard, bags are convenient and let you buy exactly what you need. Past a few cubic yards, buying bulk by the yard from a landscape supplier is almost always cheaper per unit of coverage than buying the equivalent stack of bags, since you're not paying for individual bag packaging and handling.
Loading and hauling tips
A few practical notes once you know your cubic yardage:
- Order about 10% extra to cover settling, uneven ground, and measurement error — running short mid-job means a second trip
- Tarp the load before driving — loose mulch blows out of an open bed at highway speed and is a common source of littering tickets and complaints
- Don't pile mulch above the bed rails; a heaping load is unstable and often illegal to drive with uncovered
