Cubic Yards, Tons, and Bags: A Material Conversion Guide

Ask a supply yard how many tons you need and you'll often get a question back: "tons of what?" There's no universal conversion between cubic yards and tons — volume and weight connect only through density, which swings widely by material and moisture. A cubic yard of dry mulch weighs a few hundred pounds; a cubic yard of wet sand can top a ton and a half. Same volume, very different load on your truck.

The One Formula That Actually Matters

Every yards-to-tons question comes down to this: tons = (cubic yards × pounds per cubic yard) ÷ 2,000. The 2,000 is just pounds per ton — the variable doing all the work is the density figure, which is specific to the material.

Flip it around for the reverse direction: cubic yards = (tons × 2,000) ÷ pounds per cubic yard. Use this when a yard quotes a delivery in tons and you need to know how much space that fills, or how many truck loads it takes.

The mistake people make is assuming a fixed multiplier — the myth that a cubic yard is always about 1.5 tons. That's roughly true for damp topsoil, but wrong by more than double for mulch and off by 25% or more for gravel.

Reference Densities: Pounds per Cubic Yard and Tons per Yard

Typical figures for common landscaping and construction materials. Actual density varies with moisture, particle size, and compaction, so treat these as planning numbers — confirm with your supplier for anything close to a weight limit.

  • Crushed stone / gravel: ~2,400–2,700 lb/yd³ → about 0.74–0.83 yd³ per ton (roughly 1.2–1.35 tons per cubic yard). See crushed stone for grading-specific numbers.
  • Dry sand: ~2,700 lb/yd³ → about 0.74 yd³ per ton (~1.35 tons/yd³)
  • Wet sand: ~3,375 lb/yd³ → about 0.59 yd³ per ton (~1.69 tons/yd³) — moisture alone adds roughly 25% weight over dry sand
  • Topsoil: ~2,200 lb/yd³ → about 0.91 yd³ per ton (~1.1 tons/yd³); see topsoil
  • Mulch: ~500 lb/yd³ → about 4 yd³ per ton — mulch is bulky and light, which is why a "ton of mulch" sounds like a lot but is actually a small delivery by weight
  • Compost: ~1,080 lb/yd³ → about 1.85 yd³ per ton

Worked Example: Gravel Driveway Topping

Ordering 6 cubic yards of crushed stone at 2,700 lb/yd³: tons = (6 × 2,700) ÷ 2,000 = 8.1 tons. Check that against your truck's rated payload before hauling it in one trip — 8.1 tons exceeds the capacity of essentially every half-ton and most 3/4-ton pickups, so this is a multi-trip or dump-truck-delivery job.

Reverse direction: a supplier offers to drop off 10 tons of the same stone. Cubic yards = (10 × 2,000) ÷ 2,700 ≈ 7.4 yd³ — roughly how much space the pile takes up on-site.

From Project Area to Cubic Yards

Before converting to tons, you need cubic yards. The formula: cubic yards = (length_ft × width_ft × depth_ft) ÷ 27 — 27 converts cubic feet to cubic yards (3×3×3 ft).

Most people measure depth in inches, so use this shortcut: depth_ft = depth_inches ÷ 12. Combined: cubic yards = (length_ft × width_ft × depth_inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27.

Example: a 100 sq ft patio base at 3 inches deep. Depth = 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft. Cubic yards = (100 × 0.25) ÷ 27 ≈ 0.93 yd³. At 2,700 lb/yd³ crushed stone, that's (0.93 × 2,700) ÷ 2,000 ≈ 1.25 tons — comfortably within a single pickup load if the payload sticker allows it.

Bags vs. Bulk: How Many Bags Fill a Cubic Yard

A cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, so bags per cubic yard = 27 ÷ (yield per bag, in cubic feet). Yields are printed on the bag but vary somewhat by brand. For premixed concrete, common bag sizes work out to roughly:

  • 80-lb bag: yields ~0.6 ft³ → about 45 bags per cubic yard
  • 60-lb bag: yields ~0.45 ft³ → about 60 bags per cubic yard
  • 40-lb bag: yields ~0.30 ft³ → about 90 bags per cubic yard

When Bags Stop Making Sense

Check the total weight before committing to bags: 45 bags of 80-lb concrete is 3,600 lbs for one cubic yard — a serious hauling and back-strain problem, and pricier per yard than ready-mix once you're above roughly 1–2 cubic yards. Bags suit small footings and patch jobs measured in cubic feet; for anything near a full cubic yard or more, ready-mix delivery or a bulk aggregate order is cheaper and easier on your truck's payload.

Ordering Smart: Rounding, Waste, and Compaction

Round your cubic-yard calculation up, not down — most suppliers sell in quarter- or half-yard increments, and running short mid-project means a second delivery fee and a possible color mismatch. Add 5–10% to cover compaction (loose material settles once spread and tamped) and ordinary waste from spillage or uneven sub-grade. Lean toward the higher end for gravel and soil going into a compacted base; the lower end covers mulch or compost that won't be compacted.

Once you know the tonnage, cross-check it against your vehicle. Multiple partial loads under your rated payload beat one overloaded trip — both for safety and for what overloading does to tires, brakes, and suspension over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a cubic yard always about 1.5 tons?
No — that figure only applies to certain damp, moderately dense materials. Gravel runs closer to 1.2–1.35 tons per cubic yard, wet sand can exceed 1.6 tons per cubic yard, and mulch is closer to 0.25 tons per cubic yard. Always use the material-specific density, not a rule of thumb, when weight limits matter.
Why does wet material weigh so much more than dry material of the same type?
Water fills the void spaces between particles and adds its own weight without adding much volume. Wet sand at roughly 3,375 lb/yd³ versus dry sand at roughly 2,700 lb/yd³ is about a 25% weight increase from moisture alone. After rain, assume any stockpiled aggregate is heavier than its dry-spec density until it's had time to drain and dry.
How do I figure out how many truckloads I need?
Convert your project's cubic yards to tons using tons = (cubic yards × lb/yd³) ÷ 2,000, then divide that total tonnage by your truck's rated payload capacity (found on the driver's door jamb sticker, minus passengers and existing cargo). Round up to the next whole trip, and keep a safety margin rather than loading to the exact rated limit.
Do I need to account for compaction when ordering material?
Yes, for anything that gets tamped or driven over — gravel base, topsoil under sod, fill dirt. Loose material typically compacts down 10-20% depending on the material, so ordering exactly your calculated volume can leave you short once it's compacted. Adding 5-10% extra at order time covers both compaction and normal job-site waste.
Are bagged materials cheaper than bulk delivery?
Only at small quantities. Bagged concrete, soil, or mulch carries a per-unit premium over bulk because you're paying for packaging and retail handling. Once a project needs roughly 1-2 cubic yards or more, bulk delivery (or ready-mix concrete) is almost always cheaper per yard and dramatically less physical labor than hauling and mixing dozens of bags.
