Truck shoppers and truck owners mix these two numbers up constantly, and it's an easy mistake to make: payload and towing capacity both describe how much weight your truck can handle, but they measure two completely different things. Payload is how much weight the truck can carry IN or ON itself — cargo in the bed, passengers in the cab, a bolted-on toolbox, and the tongue weight pressing down from a trailer hitch. Towing capacity is how much weight the truck can PULL behind it on a trailer.

Payload: what your truck can carry

Payload is the total weight your truck is rated to carry inside the cab and on the bed, plus any tongue weight pushing down on the hitch. It's calculated as GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) minus curb weight.

Curb weight is how much the truck weighs empty, but fully fueled and ready to drive — no cargo, no passengers, no aftermarket add-ons. GVWR is the maximum total weight the truck is engineered to safely carry, including the truck itself. Subtract one from the other and you get payload: the weight budget you have left to fill with people and stuff.

Everything you add to the truck eats into that budget: driver and passengers, tools, a camper shell, a toolbox, aftermarket bumpers, a full tank of fuel beyond what curb weight assumes, and — critically — trailer tongue weight.

Towing capacity: what your truck can pull

Why towing eats into payload

Truck manufacturers advertise a 'max payload' figure and a 'max tow rating' figure for every model, and both are real numbers achievable by that truck — just not usually at the same time, and often not on the same trim or configuration.

Max payload is typically achieved on a stripped-down configuration: two-wheel drive, regular cab, smaller engine, minimal options, because every extra pound of factory equipment (four-wheel drive, crew cab, bigger engine, tow package hardware) subtracts from the payload budget by adding to curb weight. Max tow rating, on the other hand, is often achieved on a heavier-duty configuration with the tow package, sometimes a different axle ratio, and just enough occupants and cargo to meet a minimum test weight.

In practice, the specific truck in your driveway has its own payload and towing numbers based on its exact trim, cab size, bed length, drivetrain, and options — and they will virtually never match the two headline numbers in the brochure.

Where to find your truck's actual numbers

Ignore the brochure and go to the truck itself.
